Following ‘Australia’s Country Way’, on the Burnett Hwy, a couple of hours south of Biloela, is the self-proclaimed ‘Citrus Capital of Qld’, Mundubbera. There is a buzz to the place, with the population swelled by fruit pickers. The golf course sits on the side of a hill within the town limits and has some nice slopes and elevation change for a golf course.
The condition of the course, despite its very dry appearance at first glance, may be its strength. The 328 Bermuda greens have very nice even surfaces, albeit a little sticky & soft. Surrounds are well watered and soft, while the fairways are fully grassed but bone dry. Its pretty open out here, with most fairway widths quite generous and not much in the way of hazards to stop you in your tracks. There is little to no rough and trees are sparsely populated with the firm playing corridors and soft surrounds being very conducive to low, shaped recovery shots where needed.
The green complexes are very conservative – some with slight tilts, but no real lumps, bumps or tiers to speak of. Surrounds typically have a mound on either side of the green and 5 to 10 metres of soft grass. The lone bunker is on the low, left-side of the 168m 9th.
The 4 par3, 3 par4, 2 par5 layout starts at the bottom of the hill with a relatively flat and wide-open 390m par4, before a 540m par5 up the steepest section of the property, takes you to the highest point. You are well and truly warm by the time you reach the 400m downhill par4 3rd. You then traverse the flatter section at the bottom of the hill with 3 par 3s in a row – 2 of them containing water closer to the tee than the green, and trees on the direct line to the pin. The slightly downhill 200m par3 6th is my pick of these – one that is an easy bogey for the 20 handicapper but a tough par for the scratch-marker with water coming into play green-high but 10m right.
The downhill 280m par4 8th was my favourite from a strategic viewpoint: a straightaway hole with OB all the way down the right and a slight camber away from that fence which is accentuated in the left half of the fairway for the last 40 metres. It funnels hard running balls on attempts to drive the green, to the left toward water which sits about 20m left of the green.
Overall, its a well looked after 9-holer, with a real mix of holes, without any real quirks or standout features. It is the perfect canvas for the golfers of Mundubbera to fight for weekly bragging rights
