Blog 338 – Biloela

Nomadic_golfer : August 2026 – Biloela, Qld, review

Biloela is a spunky 14 hole course in Qld’s ‘Eastern Outback’ with super putting surfaces. The property is predominantly flat, with a creek running through the property providing some topographical change and a real asset to route some holes around, while some magnificent large gums also play a part. The trees are generally sparsely populated and the rough is light so there’s plenty of opportunity to give it a rip. There are exceptions with a few OB fences, a few tight holes, a few of those big gums in tricky spots, and of course, ‘the creek holes’.

It’s dry out here but this fully watered course sports firm and fast, kikuyu fairways, and magnificent 328 Bermuda greens. The green surrounds are watered for 2 or 3 metres also, but beyond this it is dry and bouncy. Miss the greens by more than a couple of metres and you will miss them by 20. They don’t typically have large run-offs but they play as if they do because of the firm, dry surfaces.

Holes 6,7,8 occupy the territory in and around the Eastern side of the creek and are an excellent stretch: 6 at 354 with the creek cutting across in front of the tee and following down the right side for the entire hole. The tee shot is the highlight here, with a couple of 50m high trees in the direct line to the green about 150m from the tee. You either attempt to carry them or play left and make it a dog leg right. The 373m 7th is the hardest hole on the course for me and full of features. A couple of big gums not far off the tee on the left, bring the OB right very much in play off the tee. Negotiate this and you have a very difficult approach into a green with a 10m gully running across the front, diagonally from short left. Both sides of the green are guarded by severe hazards (creek one side and very thick stuff the other, both 10m wide of the green). There is also a severe drop-off over the back of the green. 8 is a lovely 105m pitch over the creek between trees.

The 542m 10th and tough 183m 11th are also quality holes but the 284m 12th could well be my favourite par4 in Qld!! Tough to describe, its slightly left to right off the tee, the fairway then straightens, before revealing the green situated left of the end of the fairway, and about 3 or 4 metres below the level of the fairway. It sits in a half-punchbowl with banks above the green on the right and drop-offs to water and OB left. Anything 4 or 5 metres right of the green will kick down hard left onto the green or down toward the fence if short of the green. It is spell-binding, and quite unique. I could chip a ball around it all day, and with the firm fairways, it would be within reach for many. A real risk-reward tee shot.

My overall take was that there are 4 or 5 very good holes here, another 4 or 5 good holes and 4 or 5 bland holes. Being a course of 14 holes, 4 of them have to be played twice and unfortunately these holes (1-4) are in the 3rd category. Nevertheless, I was thrilled with Biloela’s offering. There’s not much of anything out in these parts, but this golf course is a ripper, those ‘creek holes’ ensure. You couldn’t get anything further away from your standard, ‘nice’ middle of the road metropolitan golf course, but this is far more interesting to me!
