This is a surprisingly good golfing experience. Crafter & Mogford have done a great job in working 9 quality holes on this small parcel of land. It does get a bit squeezy, noisy and a little dangerous but there is a good mix of length and strategy required; it’s not the ‘pitch & putt’ you expect after driving past it dozens of times down South Rd.
The bentgrass greens were excellent for this winter weekday jaunt; very smooth and medium paced. They are large, have some nice subtleties and a few well placed tiers to challenge. The kikuyu fairways were fine for this time of year, considering the amount of traffic they get.
The bunkering is the stand-out feature, from Adelaide’s version of “The Spectacles” in front of the quaint short par 3 2nd, to the fairway bunker 50m out on the par 5 6th which also has a very prominent, front greenside bunker (protecting a wide, shallow roller-coaster green with water long and right), to the bunkering all the way down the left side of the landing zone and green on the mid-length par 4 7th, the bunkers are typically large, prominent and challenge the shorter lines. My favourite hole is that par 5 6th, a well placed drive will tempt you to have a crack in 2 but if the pin isn’t front left, that risk/ reward equation is heavily weighted on the risk side.
Overall, this home to some SA Legends such as Messrs Kopania & Copus, was a surprisingly good golf experience for $29. The layout is interesting and a solid challenge, condition is nice and if you can embrace the surrounding aesthetics and car noise, you will really enjoy it
